Now its time to say goodbye.. well maybe

I don't know if I've mentioned this already but I'm soo happy that this project is over! but is not why I wanted to write this post. On April 22nd at 10pm or so after taking everything in, I realized how proud I was of myself for not taking the easy route of doing the promotions or whatever for another student's senior project. I gave myself a real challenge and ( well I think) I excelled. I love the idea of " The Hair Monologues" so much that I have decided that I would like to continue it after graduation. I don't know how yet, but somehow I'm going to do it..

The cast

So for your convenience I figured I should tell you who's who's in this whole thing .. So here are the lovely ladies in my cast ...

Laurie King-freshman
Alyssa Hallmark- junior
Woryeneh Benson- sophomore
Linda Mcgriff- Senior
Karla Mera-junior
Yasmin Martinez (although she didn't perform for the show bc she only showed up for one rehearsal) - sophomore
Jackie Blackwell- senior ( she's the greatest!)
Torian Yancey ( Yasmin's replacement)- senior

Although we had some issues, lateness, not showing up, acting "brand new" (discussed in past posts) but now that this is all over ( and I feel like I'm typing this bc it's all over) I would do it all over again and work with each of these ladies again....

For the actual footage besides for interviewing these ladies, I also interviewed my intern, Aruna Dismont ( who I couldn't do any of this w/o) friends and members of OAPIA ( I suggest you guys go for an OAPIA meeting.. Thursday nights :)

Now that is just stupid...

Now I am not against relaxers but I am not an advocate either. I guess it's because I don't think the way that others wear their hair is any of my business and plus I had relaxed hair up until 2 yrs ago, but this woman was just careless...

I have never heard of Shenque or whatever relaxer brand that was.. and it was two for $5! Anyone who cares about the heath of their hair and not just of its appearance would know not to use a brand that isn't known and is 2 for $5.... I know it's a recession but...no..... unfortunately too many women just care too much about the appearance only but they must not realize that if they keep doing that then they won't have any hair left to care about..

My hair idols

So I know that I don't have hair that is identical to many of the women that I posted. But I think all of their hairs ( if that makes sense) are absolutely beautiful. But still be happy with your hair!!

the performance pt dos

Sorry, I could have finished the story in the last post, but it was starting to remind me of writing a paragraph and then it wasn't fun anymore... So although we hadn't done a proper run through with the projector, everything was going well during the show until I pressed the wrong button after the second sketch.. when I was working on the project in final cut pro I inserted a slug.. ( for ppl who don't know fcp,it's just putting blank space in the video,to separate one scene to the other if need) so yes I did it on purpose. Well i forgot what I did and I decided that I was going to press the pause button so the gap from the live sketch to the next part of the footage would be so long. Well if you press the pause button once, it pauses but if you press it twice or maybe three times in my case.... well it doesn't exactly pause. I had pressed the button so many times it just kept going back to the set of footage from the beginning of the show. That awkward silence in the dark while you're trying to fix a problem ( w/o light) can be pretty embarrassing.. I would have turned on the light but I think that would have been worse, luckily Woryeneh ( a cast member) brought me some time by being her funny self. After that 30-40 seconds of stumbling to find the right spot in the footage, everything else ran smoothly. Everyone that came seemed to really enjoy the show, so that made me happy. After the show,my family and I brought out some BJ's food to feed everyone which made everyone else happy as well.

Sorry

I know I haven't been the best mother to you Hair Tales blog and for this I am sorry...Maybe one day you will forgive me.. or not.. anyway I just finished watching a Queen concert. I love them! I was also thinking about what I should do with me hair because it's starting to bore me.... any suggestions?

The performance

Hi everyone!

So on Thursday, it finally happened! The performance of " The Hair Monologues"! It was set to start at 8:30pm but of course nothing ran smoothly. We started about 15-20 minutes late. I arrived late bc I had to pick up the projector from CTS.Then we had to get everything ready. Fix the lighting, make sure the DVD ran properly with the projector, set up the chairs, etc. We were one around 8:10 or so but I was still being asked questions by the cast members about where to stand since we had to change some of the staging around with the chairs being out. However I thought everything was going to be ok until some asked " Where's Karla?" Karla is one of the cast members and at 8:14pm, she was still not there. I was about to pull my hair out.. so much for talking about hair... Karla did arrive around 8:25 or so, but my family was late. They got there for 8:45 or something like that. I should have know they would be late because my mother was one showing everyone how to get to Purchase and she is always late...... for everything.......

Dress Rehearsal or something like it

So I had a dress rehearsal yesterday in the Stood from 6pm-8. Well those were the scheduled times. Of course the usauls were late, by this time, it was an hour intot he rehearsal... I'm a little too ussed to it. however this dress rehearsal sucked becuase

1) there was no projector.. tech services denied my requests, and so I had no choice but to turn to CTS and the projector that I needed won't be here until Thursday ( the day of the show)

2) Whitson's is really crappy. The Stood itself reminds me of a basement that I have no desire to send a good amount in, but idk if ppl don't see the garbage in whitson's or no one cares but omg I'm bring hand sanitizer on Thursday... I'm not naming any names but the manger or the stood ( again no name naming) hasn't been much of a help. He's never there and when I call him ( bc I need answers and he is getting paid to do this) he acts as if I'm harassing him.. he doesn't doesn't want me to harass him bc I can do that.. anyway he said he would be there that Sunday to help me with the lights and stuff, but I get there and no manger..... luckily some guy with darker hair was able to help a little although he really didn't much about the light either..

3) one cast member was stuck somewhere and couldn't make it in time

4) why did another cast member ( the one that was an hr late) try to speed everything up, asked if another cast member could direct their sketch and then had the nerve to ask me when the show was ( that damn question)? When I said Thursday she informed that she had class.... I have never wanted smack someone so much in my life

Rehersals, Rehearsals, rehearsals

So this isn't as easy as I thought it would be... I mean the sketches are mostly improv, which saves me from having to literally go over lines.. and they are about 6 minutes long each which keeps me from having long rehearsals but I am still having rehearsal issues. My problem is with people not showing up with no explanation or coming late every time. I really don't know what to say about this. On one hand, I'm grateful that these students are part of the project and doing it for free but on the other hand, it's just like why can't you just be a little respectful and call or say that you can't make it when I send out the rehearsal dates... and if someone asks me about when the show is one more time ( April 22nd by the way :) when I have said it at every rehearsal and mentioned it in more than one email.... I'm going to scream!

Interviews and location

I'm officially excited because my senior project is becoming real! I have completed a majority of my interviews however I have 2 more people that I would like to interview Also I have given my self the cut off date of March 19th. I can't extend it for too long because " The Hair Monologues" will performed on April 22nd. It was going to be in the Co-op but that location is too small and it will now be in the Stood in Whitson's Hall.

P.S- it is sooo hard to find children to interview on film... ugh

Auditions

Hello Blog world!!!

So as you read last week I had my auditions. They were last Thursday and Friday. So.. no one showed up for Thursday. I forced my friends to come and I told an old roommate about it. Luckily she liked the idea of ” The Hair Monologues ” and she audition. The auditions still went well. It prepared me for the Friday auditions. I didn’t think anyone would show up but 3 people showed up!!! And I didn’t even know them!! ( ok I knew one, but still..). I will put the audition footage up once I take my lazy ass to the DMZ lab…

I'm on my way!! .. I think

Original posting date: February 16, 2010

So I know it's been a while since I've posted anything.. sorry... Anyway my auditions are happening this week. This Thursday and Friday actually. I'm printing out my flyers today and my facebook event has already been been up since yesterday.I'm nervous. I think not many people will show up and then I'm feeling the pressure of doing this all in one semester.. like 2-3 months at this point. I'm also feeling stressed between senior project and two jobs, where one can lead to a future in the company if they like me enough.. I hope this all turns out well

For some reason, it's not letting me post my flyer on here. Maybe I will take a picture and post on here later..

I'm backk!!

Hello!!!

My name is Shante and I’m a 21 year old senior at a college in NY. I started this blog because it was an assignment. This blog is going to be tracking the process of my senior project. My senior project is called ” The Hair Monologues”. The set up is similar to ” The Vagina Monologues”, but it’s not about the V-jay jay nor about the hair down there! LOL. It’s about the hair up there! Yes we style it, teaase it, damage it. Everyone has a hair story and ” The Hair Monologues is there to reveal it!

I will post rehearsals photos and videos, my thoughts and maybe other things until the premiering night of THM ( yes I have an acronym, that’s what I do..). In the meantime, I have another blog that I have abandoned on the doorstep of blogspot. It’s called “Cookies and Cake”, if you would like to read it.

Thanks!

S. Skyers

P.S- I first created this blog on wordpress, but we didn't get along so I returned to blogspot, where blogging is simple.
